It is possible for the handle of a knife to hit the target instead of the blade as a properly weighted knife will tumble end over end in flight. The trick is to throw from the right distance that the knife will stick its leading edge into the target when it hits.
The handle, the bow and the blade.
Depends entirely on the knife. Most of the time people try to throw knives that have a heavier handle than a blade and that's just stupid... The best throwing knives are knives that have a heavier blade than a handle for example a Bowe Knife. But, if you have a knife like the one I described the trick to throwing it is to hold it by the tip of the blade and then aim at your target.
The blade of a gravity knife is contained within the handle of the knife. It requires a spinning motion or gravity for the blade to come out of the handle.

the tang
A tool that has a curved blade and a small handle.
The handle unscrews which releases the tension on the blade. There is a pin through each end of the blade that slips into a notch in each end of the handle.
Full tang means the metal of the blade continues full length through the handle, making for a stronger bond between blade and handle.
