To enter basic training as anything other than a Private E1, you must meet a couple criteria:

  • Earn 30 or more college credits before enlistment or through a military scholarship/grant program.
  • Join under the Buddy Program (I am uncertain this still applies)
  • Be prior service and have reached at least E3 before enlisting in the Marine Corps.

Any of these can work, but you will remain E3 until you reach the requirements for promotion to E4.
