When you write dialogue or conversation, you begin a new paragraph whenever the speaker changes. Also, if one person has a very long speech and the subject changes, you start a new paragraph without placing quotes at the end. Here are some examples for you: "I am going to the store," called Jason. "Do you need anything?" "No thanks," Bill replied. *** "As you can see," the professor explained, "dialogue is easy to write. You simply put down what a person is saying, or what you want them to say in your story. The trick is to listen to how people speak and to be able to write in such a manner that the reader can pick up personality and emotion by reading the dialogue. "However, you should not try to write your dialogues by spelling out dialect words. This makes your story hard to read, and it gets irritating. You might spell out one or two words to give the general idea that the person speaking is talking in a certain dialect, then just spell the rest of the dialogue normally." Notice that in the last example, I changed paragraphs without putting closing quotation marks after the first paragraph of the professor's speech. This shows that the second paragraph is still part of the same dialogue, and is said by the same person.

It depends.

If it is just a few words of the same person who is currently talking then don't bother. Just put them in italics. eg

"Harold and Anne? Yeah I saw Harold and Anne. They were... oh no, you idiot don't say that... sitting at opposites sides of the church singing songs about chastity. Yeah that's what they were doing. Nothing else. Nothing else at all."

If it is the thoughts of a different person than the one talking then yes even if it is just a single word. eg.

"...and so far we haven't been able to determine the identity of the third man."

"Yes!"

"Although we do know that he is thirty-five years old, bald, of dark complexion, a mole on his right eye-lid a jagged scar on his right hand, missing the ring finger on his left hand, walks with a pronounced limp, and is in the habit of saying 'Ohmygod'."

"OhMyGod!"

If it is more than a couple of sentences then yes definitely make a new paragraph no matter who it is.

Whenever you want to start a new thought

Here are the reasons to start a new paragraph:

  • the subject of the paragraph changes
  • the speaker changes
  • the paragraph is getting way too long!
  • you feel like changing it!

Yes, you should begin a new paragraph each time the dialogue changes from one speaker to another. You should also change paragraphs if one speaker has a very long speech -- just to cut it down into manageable chunks.

Yes, I would do. It would make it more clearer for the reader to understand.

No. You only italicize it if it is italicized in the book/story.

When your writing a letter do you enter to start a new paragraph?

You definitely do if you are starting a new paragraph whilst handwriting work, but if you are doing work on the computer, you don't have to- I think you have to leave a line to show a paragraph if you are typing it. It is the same with speech- you have an indent for each new speaker, but stay on the same line if the same person is talking. (Leave a line if you type it) Hope that helps!

Do you know Different between hard enter and soft enter?

Hard enter starts a new paragraph that is (from the point of styles) detached from the previous one. Soft enter starts only a new line, you use it if you want to have your sentence in the new line but within the same paragraph. Also, styling applied to the paragraph applies on this sentence.

Is indenting a paragraph just before a new speaker considered part of mechanics in grammar?
