It has been known for some time that stars die, and that they do so regularly. It has recently been observed that stars are constantly being formed in certain regions of space. These two facts are independent of each other, so that it cannot be said that one is formed to replace a dead one.... anyway, there is no accurate census of stars and no way of tallying the number of dead ones to the number of new ones.
