When a television is put into stand by does this mean that it still consumes electricity or is there no electricity usage?

A television that has been set into stand by mode will still use some electricity. The electricity usage is much less than if the television was fully on but more than if it was off.

Turning off any unnecessary electrical equipment will save energy - no matter what the weather is ! The trouble is - many people prefer to leave TV's etc on 'stand-by' rather than switch them off completely. Even if a TV is on stand-by - it's still using electricity - since the circuit that checks for a signal from the remote is still active !Boiling a cup of water in the microwave (instead of using a kettle) uses much less electricity !

It is a standby circuit, used in older tv's it was called "instant on". This is when transistors were in their infancy and most tv's still used vacuum tubes. The time period for them to warm up was about a minute. Instant on television circuit seemed like a great step forward. Now it is considered a power wasting circuit.
