It came with the colonists. On one island off South Carolina one person tried to grow tea. The plants are still there producing tea. When tea is grown only the tops are cut off the plant, so that means the original plants are still growing 200 years later. One of the products that came on ships to the colonies was English tea. The smugglers smuggled in Dutch tea which was popular because it was cheaper than the English tea.
