Johann Gottfried Moritz of Berlin patented the bass tuba in F, with five piston valves. Their tuba is in the Museum of Music History in Berlin, Germany today.
The very first tuba was made in the 1500's, but in 1815 valves were added to the tuba to make it the way it is today.

The tuba is the youngest of the brass instruments, made in the middle of the nineteenth century.4. An orchestra often only has one tuba, although it is also common to have three.
The tuba is made of around 16 feet of tubing and commonly has three or four valves.

"International Tuba Day" is celebrated on the first Friday in May each year.
Saxes were made after clarinet. So was tuba.
This is very interesting to note that the first REALperformance of the tuba was in 1864/1865! I couldn't believe that the tuba is that old! I am a music teacher in Texas at the Houston school of fine arts and just went over how beautiful the "Tuba" really is! I hope this helps, and keep playing!
