In 1787, John Fitch demonstrated a 45 foot steamboat on the Delaware River. He later built a larger steamboat that carried passengers and freight. He received a patent for his invention in 1791.
I think you're referring to "John Fitch" who allegedly invented the steam boat. In actuality, Robert Fulton invented the steam boat in 1807.
