Retrieved from "http:en.wikipedia.org the free encyclopedia A batting helmet is the protective headgear worn by batters in a game of Baseball of softball. It is meant ot protect the batter from stray pitches thrown by the pitcher. Batting helmets were not required in Major League Baseball until 1956, a result of several years of hospitalizations due to injury form hits to the head. Occasionally, a player who perceives a higher-than-normal risk of head injury will wear a batting helmet in the playing field. One notable example is current major-leaguer John Olerud, who started doing so after undergoing emergency surgery for a cerebral aneurysm while attending Washington state University.
The wearing of helmets became compulsory after the death of Andrey Kivilev in 2003.
Baseball helmets became popular in the 1950s although wearing a helmet at bat was not made a mandatory rule until 1971.

Obviously, helmets are worn for protection as hockey is a very dangerous game to play. Hockey is a body contact sport, along with flying pucks, raised sticks, sharp skate blades, etc. When the first helmets were made and worn I have no idea at this time. Maybe someone reading this will know more information.
Start over and do it again ;D
NHL players started wearing helmets as soon as the the 1928-29 season when Boston Bruins' player George Owen wore one. However, they carried a negative stigma that they did not begin to shed until after Bill Masterson died after suffering severe brain trauma in 1968. After that players began wearing helmets more often and in 1979 the league mandated that any players who signed professional contracts after that date would be required to wear a helmet. Players already playing in the league were exempt from this new rule. Craig McTavish would be the last player to play in the NHL without a helmet, retiring after the 1996-97 season.
