I can't answer the chronological angle, but the main objection was to fantasy in general and the sort of modern Fairy Tales which start out in reality USA or UK as is the case with Alice, then use some fantasy device to go into an unreal fantasy land, there are problems. It was banned in China because it had animals on an even footing with human beings such as the Mad Hatter. a similar case exists with the various incarnations of the Wizard of Oz. both start out realistically, then transition to a fantasy world- and both turn out to be turbulent dreams or nightmares- to tie things together. that would be the objection.
