Patronage was popular during the Renaissance. It is the relationship between a wealthy family and artisan. An example is the Medici family and Botticelli.
In the election of 1880, the Stalwarts supported Grant, liked the Patronage system and supported radical reconstruction. On the other hand, the Half-Breeds hated Grant, wanted to reform the Patronage System and wanted to end radical reconstruction.
The patronage system (aka the spoils system) is when one is given a government job by the winning party because they are a friend/ family member or supporter, while the merit system is when government jobs are given based on merit: their knowledge of politics and how they could help the government.

difference between as on and as at
The difference would lie first and foremost on location/jurisdiction. Depending on the state's constitution, the constable would have the same power/authority as a sheriff including appointing deputies. The main difference between the two however is in the way they earn their wages. Sheriffs are salaried offices paid by taxpayer money whereas constables are paid by fees set by statute. Also, the authority of the constable is greatly dictated by the commissioning body (if appointed) or by the general statutes, if elected.
They were a series of musical compositions produced by W.A. Mozart during his patronage in Salzburg between 1773 and 1777.
