They make them already. The Hilux (sold in the US as the Tacoma) is available worldwide with a diesel motor, as is the Land Cruiser (the US Land Cruiser is based on a Tacoma chassis, but the rest of the world, it's the FJ70, which replaced the FJ40 in production in 1984). Diesel just never really caught on in the US, where everyone is fixated on horsepower, and seemingly unaware of the benefits of low end torque delivered by diesel.
