Three short blasts means you are operating in reverse. One prolonged blast followed by 3 short blasts means boat under tow in redcued visibility conditions.
Two short blast shows the intention to direct the course of their vessel to their own port (left).
Disagreement has four syllables.
5 or more short blasts.....if you are taking the boating exam try typing the Arizona course boat ED after every question you type, in Google is what i used if your state is not Arizona then just type you state in.

1 blast means, I am turning to starboard (right) 2 blasts means, I am turning to port (left) 3 blasts means, I am going astern (backwards) 5 blasts means, I don't know what you are doing, get out of my way.....and usually accompanied by colourful language and waving of arms etc. Often heard around the commercial jetty when recreational boats get in the way of large commercial ferries etc...
5 (or more) short blasts is the boating DANGER signal. It is mainly used when two vessels are approaching each other and the intent of the other vessel is unknown and/or may be dangerous to either vessel. A prudent captain will immediately slow down or stop when upon hearing this signal and take appropriate action.
