there are two different answers to this and i believe it is due to different reasons. if you pay online you will find many specials but those specials are not always available when booking at the airport in advance. also when booking a flight at the airport the day of, they normally consider your flight an emergency and depending on the availabily and if any specials are still running you are actually risking yourself to paying an expensive flight. by best suggestion is if you want to book a flight at the last minute in the airport you should try airtran or jetblue first they normally offer great deals. good luck!
