A waterspout is an event where a rotating vortex of low pressure air above the ocean can suck seawater up into the air to a great height. the same thing happens, without the vortex, in a drinking straw when you suck.

Why would you enter a cave and travel upward instead of downward into the earth?

Because the cave is inside of a mountain. Caves are formed by water flowing down. And if the entrance is at the bottom of a mountain, you are going up the flow of the water that caused the cave, rather than following the flow down. +++ Indeed - though many caves are entered at the top, where the stream enters, and there are others with two or more entrances at different levels.

Can water flow uphill?
