If you go to a shady shop, there's the risk of contracting AIDS, Hepatitis, or other infections. That can be avoided by going to a shop that's clean and uses an autoclave. Because lip piercings are so close to your teeth/gums, there is the risk of gum and enamel erosion. Both are irreversible. This can usually be avoided with proper placement and wearing studs instead of rings but it'll probably happen eventually.
