You can tell by the male mockingbird usaully has a greeny silver slit under its throut flap and they flear it during mating season.
It's fairly easy to determine the gender of zebras- males have a dark red beak, orange eyepatches, a striped chest, and chestnut spotted flank patches. Females are overall grayish, with a more orange beak. Also, males are the only ones that sing, though the females will verbalize as well.
Only once they start to molt their baby plumage- the boys will get faint markings, that eventually darken to the males' distinctive coloration. They first start to mark up when they are several weeks old, but have not quite reached sexual maturity- so you have time to separate males and females.
