There are certain criteria one must fulfil to be eligible to vote in the UK:

  • be registered with the electoral commission
  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be a resident in the UK, or a resident of up to 20 years abroad while retaining British citizenship
  • a British or Commonwealth citizen

The above criteria is for General Elections. Members of the European Union who are living in Britain may vote in local elections.

You should note also that "idiots" or "lunatics" (words taken from legislation - those in mental institutions) and prisoners are ineligible to vote.
