What are your goals with the engine? Stock replacement, or increasing performance? How many miles are on the engine?
http://www.customclassictrucks.com/techarticles/0405cct_vortec_cylinder_heads_small_block_chevy/index.html This will answer all your questions. Yes it can be done. There's a bit more to it than just torquing on a new set of heads, but if you can replace heads, you can more than handle the rest of it. Should flow much better than the stock TBI heads. Vortec heads flow far better!
BAD LIFTER, KNOCKING ROD (NOT GOOD)
If it is an automatic it should have been done sooner.
I had a 95 Chevy truck like ours. When my heads started to leak I noticed the oil got real milky/brown from coolant getting in the oil. I removed the heads and found out the 350 Chevy motors will start leaking on the ends of the heads when the motor gets a lot of miles on it. After fixing it,I gave this truck to my son and now it has over 300,000 miles on it and still running strong! You can get a leakdown test done to see how tight the top-end is.
There are economy heads that use less water.
no. depending on the miles you might want to have a valve job done. you should have the head checked to make sure it's not warped, or cracked. if you have a valve job done they should check that automatically.
When changing lanes, it's important to take your time and be mindful of your surroundings. Remember, it's not a race - slow and steady wins the safety game. Just like painting a happy little tree, changing lanes smoothly and patiently will make your journey a much more pleasant one.
You won't find better iron, readily available Chevy heads. Had my set for years. Had 1.60 stainless Ferrara Ex valves put in, so I could run nos. 150. Put in beehive springs good for 550 lift. Done deal. 350/vortec/ air gap/650 DP/HOT Chevy hyd roller. maybe 425 hp. And all the OLD Chevy stuff fits! Headers, water pump, power strng, distributors, Vortec heads and intake wil fit on any 350 Chevy. Best value for SBC of all time..
this is a big job , pull off intake manifold and the heads to get to the lifters , and when you put it back together adjust your valves . if not done correctly you could ruin engine.
I just had mine done on a 2001 and it was about $850
It is advisable to have the ignition coil grounded on a 2003 Chevy Astro. This should especially be done when you are working on spark plugs and wires.Ê
The phase rotation of motor should be always done from motor side i.e The motor terminal box.
