What two sensory clues might indicate the presence of hazardous materials?
Irritation of the nose or watering of the eyes might indicate the presence of a hazardous material. However, sensory clues should never be relied upon in determining whether a hazardous material is present. Some materials produce very unpleasant sensory responses, but are not hazardous when doing so. On the other hand, some materials can be present in very dangerous concentrations without triggering any sensory response.
How do toxic materials differ from hazardous materials?
Answer All toxic is materials are hazardous, but not all hazardous materials are toxic. For example, an explosive is hazardous but not necessarily toxic. Answer Hazardous materials might not necessarily be toxic. Hazardous materials are things that should be handled with care and can be potentially dangerous if not taken with caution. For example, medical offices have a Hazardous Material box for needles that have been used among other medical equipment. They pose a threat if not handled properly, but just touching a used needle isn't going to be harmful to a person, but they do have potential to harm, that is why it is hazardous to the health. Toxic can be deadly. Toxic can be waste or gas or anything that is deemed fatal. For example, Waste Plants are toxic, and the people who work in these plants are professionals who must wear gas masks and toxic suits - think of Homer Simpson in the opening credits and theme song of The Simpsons if you need a mental picture. So while Hazardous Material has the potential of health risk and endangerment, Toxic Materials are fatal when not handled properly.

Asked in Preschool
Why use natural materials in preschool?
The idea of using natural materials in preschool is to avoid having the children use supplies that might be harmful to them. Unfortunately, using products that are labeled or advertised as natural does not necessarily mean that you are doing that. It is more effective to find out what ingredients are in the products, which may not be easy or even possible when selecting supplies. Because of that, teaching children to keep them away from their mouths is important. It might help to also explain why they need to be kept away from the mouth: that there might be something in the crayons, markers, etc. that is okay in them, but may not be okay if it was in the child's body.
