Slavery in America was abolished by the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitituion, passed in 1865.
The British offered them freedom if they served with them. An interesting historical fact is that many slaves found freedom on ships.

Slaves did not receive their freedom upon reaching a certain age. They were freed when a law was passed or a war was lost and all slaves in a given area were freed at the same time.
Slaves did not have the right to own property, marry freely, have legal protection, or receive education. They were also denied basic human rights such as freedom of movement, freedom of speech, and the right to a fair trial.
