Where did you come across M. A. Couper? I have seen "M. A. Couper" show up in a couple citations of an 1858 chemistry in a french chemistry journal. Not sure if the error is in the original or just in the citations, but "M. A. Couper" has to be Archibald Scott Couper, one of a few chemists with claim to priority over structure theory (August Kekule is generally given primary credit). No idea whether Couper purposefully signed his name incorrectly, or if the French journal misprinted it, or if an early reprint in an English language text (possibly _The Chemist_, see below) made and perpetuated the error. Or maybe there actually is an M.A. Couper, though that seems somewhat far-fetched.Interestingly, though I would imagine coincidentally, one of the other big early figures in structure theory had the initials "A" and "M" - Aleksandr Mikhailovich Butlerov.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archibald_Scott_Couperhttp://books.google.com/books?id=Yy84AAAAMAAJ
