Pyrmont, Australia was an important port until the end of WWII. At the end of the war, the area was flooded by migrants. Much of the important war and pre-war manufacturing lost its importance, and many remaining manufacturers move to suburban areas of Sydney. During the 70s, Port Botany had developed a container handling facility which left similar facilities in Pyrmont broke and empty. As jobs left the city, so did the residents. From a high of 19,000 residents in 1900, Pyrmont fell to a mere 1,590 in 1981.
