The county seat of Sullivan Co. in northeast Tennessee, Blountville is named after William Blount, first governor of the Territory of the United States South of the Ohio River. The settlement began as a fort in the 1780’s after long serving as a crossroads for travelers heading west. Sullivan Co. includes Bristol, Kingsport and Johnson City, commonly called the Tri-Cities. During the Civil War, a four-hour battle occurred in Blountville in 1863 which destroyed nearly the entire town. After rebuilding, the community voted not to incorporate, feeling government services would be wasted on such a small area. If incorporated, Blountville would be Tennessee’s second-oldest town. The historic district of Blountville is included in the National Register of Historic Places. Appalachian Ghost Walks features the historic district in it’s tours of haunted mountain areas. Tri-Cities Regional Airport is located in Blountville, and nearby Boone Lake, along with the Appalachian Caverns, are major East Tennessee tourist attractions. East Tennessee State University is located in Johnson City.
