The first amphibious operation in the US Civil War was in August, 1861. Union troops took Cape Hatteras in North Carolina. It was a strategic elbow island on the Outer Banks. During a two day battle , quickly constructed Confederate forts of Hatteras and Clark guarding the Hatteras Inlet were bombarded by a fleet of eight Union warships. Following that action, two troop ships carrying 900 soldiers under the command of General Butler, took more then 600 Confederate captives.
In North Carolina, several inlets connect to larger sounds, including Oregon Inlet, Hatteras Inlet, and Ocracoke Inlet. These inlets link the Atlantic Ocean to significant bodies of water like Pamlico Sound and Albemarle Sound. They play a crucial role in navigation, fishing, and the ecosystem of the coastal region.
The first sizable combination of Union army and navy forces was aimed at the Hatteras Inlet of North Carolina in August of 1861. The Blockade Board had recommended the operation based on information that the Confederates were fortifying the inlet as a base for privateers.
