A brigade of the 18th Corps of the Army of the James reached the Richmond-Petersburg Railroad, as more of a scouting mission than anything else on May 6, 1864. They skirmished with a small Rebel unit near Port Walthall Junction, then returned to the Bermuda Hundred. On May 7, Union troops returned to the Junction to destroy the railways and were met with a much larger Confederate force and this began the real Battle of Port Walthall Junction. The Rebels were still vastly outnumbered and took a defensive position behind the railroad embankment. The Union troop advantage was actually three to one, but the Federal commanders did not press their initial attacks which the enemy was able to contain. Although the mission could be called a failure at that point, the Federals were able to rip up one hundred feet of tracks. This destruction was quickly repaired after the Union's retreat.
