Brigham Young was not officially made the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) until December 1847, 3 1/2 years after the death of Joseph Smith. However, Brigham was President of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles beginning in 1840 and was a very influential and beloved leader by many church members, so although he wasn't technically the president of the church, many considered him to be Joseph's rightful successor.
