The Reverend Blackstone conducted the first Anglican religious services of record in Rhode Island. -Roger Williams is considered the founder of Rhode Island. He was banished from Massachusetts and was the first white settler in Rhode Island; then occupied by the Narragansett Indians. Their chief Canonicus gave him land that the very religious Williams then named Providence.
The first English settlers came in 1633. They were Puritans from Massachusetts, led by the Puritan reverend Thomas Hooker. They founded the Connecticut Colony in 1636. It was admitted as one of the original Thirteen Colonies in 1788. The name is based on Mohican and Algonquin Indian words for a "place beside a long river"
