In 1907, after three hard years for Carter, Lord Carnarvon employed him to supervise Carnarvon's Egyptian excavations in the Valley of the Kings. The intention of Gaston Maspero, who introduced the two, was to ensure that Howard Carter imposed modern archaeological methods and systems of recording.[7][8]Carnarvon financed Carter's work in the Valley of the Kings to 1914, but until 1917 excavations and study were interrupted by the 1st wold war. Following the end of the First World War, Carter aggressively resumed his work. After several years of finding little, Lord Carnarvon became dissatisfied with the lack of results, and in 1922 informed Carter that he had one more season of funding to search the Valley of the Kings and find the tomb.
the valley of the kings was known for a long time. a better question would be, who is the first modern archaeologist to excavate in the valley of the kings. all other excavations were considered grave robbing. just ask dr. hwass.
1922 by Howard Carter, financed by Lord Carnarvon
One of the difficulties were that Tut's tomb was buried secretly underground. He searched in the valley of the kings for seven years. just so you know , I'm gonna be buried beside MY mother!! :-)

Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon were the archaeologists that discovered Tutankhamun's tomb in The Valley of The Kings. On the 4th of November 1922 they first looked into the untouched tomb of Tutankhamun; it was very surprising that it hadn't already been robbed. Just a few things to say about that, it had been robbed already; just not Tutankhamun's body. Howard Carter was the person who discovered Tut's tomb, Lord Carnarvon was the person paying.
