The Venerable Mother Catherine Elizabeth McAuley ( 1778 to 1841, was an Irish nun, who founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831.She became an orphan at 18 then had to move to live with relatives, whom had problems with her spirituality, after a few years, her relative also stuggled finacially and had to give catherine up. She, then got a job as a companion to a lady called Mrs. Callahan and her husband. Catherine was cery close to the callahans and was also considered their child as they didn't have any.When both, Mr and Mrs callahan died they both gave all their fortune to catherine, She chose to use it to build a house where she and other women could take in homeless women and children to provide care and an education for them. By the time of her death she had established twelve foundations in Ireland and two in England, and there were 150 Sisters of Mercy.
