The American civil war started, due to the growing division between the industrial north and the agrarian south. This started way before the country was even alive. Even after we had become a country multiple compromise's worked, but for only short period's. After the Louisiana purchase and the Mexican cession, the question of where slavery would be aloud to spread constantly came up. With the division of the democratic party Abraham Lincoln won the presidency that ultimately led to 11 state seceding, feeling their way of life under attack.

It depends entirely on the country. Some countries even have multiple civil wars. Please resubmit the question specifying the particular civil war.
