Dudu Fisher first appeared as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables in 1987, at the age of 26, in Tel Aviv. After three years of service in the Israeli army, at 22, he had become the Chief Cantor of the Great Synagogue in Tel Aviv.
Fisher first fell in love with the role and the musical Les Mis in London a year previously and became determined to try out for the upcoming Hebrew adaptation in Israel. He was chosen for the lead by director Stephen Pimlot, and it became the longest running show in Israel, with Fisher in the starring role in Tel Aviv from 1987-1990.
He later went to star in the main role on Broadway in New York (1993-1994), then on London's West End, where he was invited to give a command performance before Queen Elizabeth.
Both in NY and London, Dudu Fisher was the first performer excused from performing the role Friday night or Saturday, because of his observance of the Jewish sabbath.
