He was not the first prime minister of Ireland. He first became President of the Executive Council, the equivalent of what other countries would call a Prime Minister, on the 9th of March 1932. He was not the first person to hold that position. WT Cosgrave held it before he did, taking the position in December 1922. During the time that Éamon De Valera was President of the Executive Council, a new constitution was written and the title was changed to Taoiseach, the title still used today. He was the first person to hold the title of Taoiseach.
