The first Anthony Ashley-Cooper (1st Earl of Shaftesbury) fled London in 1682 to avoid trial for treason, and died of illness in Amsterdam in January, 1683. The modern Anthony Ashley-Cooper (10th Earl, 1938-2004) was killed by his wife and brother-in-law when he was 66. His body was recovered in 2006 and his killers were convicted of his murder. His son Anthony Ashley-Cooper (11th Earl, 1977-2005) died of a heart attack at age 27 while in New York City.
