To gain their independence from Europe, you see Europe had control over their taxes, food, etc. The Americans didn't like that so they asked for independence but the English didn't want them to be independent which irrevocably started a war.
It was a dangerous document because it shows the civilians of Europe how the U.S. was independent while Europe wasn't.
