1966. There were several attempts early in the century, but failed. Lyndon Johnson signed a bill in 1966 making it "official." "Official" does not mean it's a federal holiday, i.e., not a paid day off, just that it's recognized as a distinctive day honoring fathers.

Father's Day is not an official holiday in the US. Attempts to make it a national holiday have not passed Congress. Even though Woodrow Wilson made a speech in honor of the day and Calvin Coolidge said he was in favor of it, neither issued an official proclamation making Father's Day a national holiday.

Richard Nixon signed Fathers' Day into law in 1972. Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation recognizing it in 1964. Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge came out in favor of the holiday but neither issued an official proclamation about it.

The holiday in the US has been mostly promoted by retailers of men's clothing and greeting card companies. It is the biggest day of the year for collect phone calls.

According to Wikipedia, Fathers Day was first established by Sonora Dodd in 1910. Although Woodrow Wilson wanted to make the date an official date of celebration in 1916(at a party), Congress resisted. By the time Calvin Coolidge came to the presidency Congress backed down enough and let it pass(1924). In 1966, Lyndon Johnson issued the proclamation of the first official weekend to be the third Sunday in June. Richard Nixon signed in into law in 1972.

Father's Day did not become an official U.S. holiday until 1972, when then-President Nixon issued a proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as Father's Day in the United States.
