Answerthat is the wrong answer the "officlal" VE (victory Europe) day is may8. although Germany surrendered on may 7, a decleration of unconditional surrender was singed in the us betwen two germna leaders, churchill and eisnhower, but since Stalin was not involved he damanded that it be considered invalid and the enxt day with all 4 leaders it was singed in Berlin. but oddly enough the soviets celebrate iit on may 9th since that wad the day Stalin arrived home Answer... Russia celebrates VE on the 9th of May because of the time difference; as far as i know the unconditional surrender was signed at a couple of minutes past 11 pm on the 8th of May - that already being the 9th of May in Russia! Yes the Soviet Union invaded the eastern part of Germany and took Berlin.

The US, British commonwealth and French troops invaded from west and occupied the whole of the country, divided in 4 zones under these authorities.

In the British military, there were soldiers both from many commonwealth countries, like Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, as well as allied without control of own territory, like Poland.
