The Beatles won Best New Artist in 1964 and Best Performance by a Vocal Group for A Hard Day's Night in the same year. In 1967 they won Best Contemporary Single (for Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band - which, ironically, was not released as a single in the UK). The Beatles also won Album of the Year in 1967; they were the first rock band to even be nominated for that award and remained the only rock band nominated until 1970. Ironically, the Beatles "best" year for the Grammys was 1996 when they won three: Best Music Video, Long Form - for The Beatles Anthology, Best Music Video, Short Form - for Free as a Bird and Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal (again for Free as a Bird).
