Why was Harrisburg chosen as the state capital of Pennsylvania?

In 1789, Pennsylvania's Assembly deemed Philadelphia was "an unfortunate location". Plans were being made to relocate the capital to a more suitable location.

In 1810, eight locations were considered as the ideal location for Pennsylvania's capital. Harrisburg won the honor. It was selected in large part because of the Susquehanna river which the would serve the capital area well.

The move was completed in October of 1812.

Harrisburg is located on the Susquehanna River and is more centralized in the State, even though more southern. Lancaster, the older 'capitol' site was in the Allehenny - Appalachian Mountains which gets snow and fog at higher elevations. The routes are less treacherous to Harrisburg, especially now with Interstates.
