The Alps provided protection against invaders from the north.
The Alps in the northern part of the Italian peninsula provided a natural barrier to invaders. The Alps, however, were not insurmountable and incursion by barbaric tribes were part of early and late Roman history. Also, as formidable as these mountains were, the Carthage general Hannibal was able to cross the Alps with a large army and war elephants during the 2nd Punic War.

There isn't any. Rome is built on and aroud hills, which in no way could be considered mountains. The mountains in Italy are the Apennines and the Alps, neither of which are in Rome or even near to Rome.
Gaston Rebuffat was the first to climb all six Classic North Faces of the Alps in the 1930's. He wrote an account of these climbs in 1954, Etoiles et Tempêtes (Starlight and Storm).The Trilogy of the Alps' faces (Eiger, Matterhorn, and Grandes Jorasses) were climbed in one year (Summer 1961-1962) by Leo Schlommer. The first Winter climb of same was accomplished by Ivano Ghirardini in 1977-1978.
