"Icthyosaurs" were large marine reptiles.
Icthyosaurs and plesiosaurs are referred to as marine reptiles. They were not closely related.
Plesiosaurs and icthyosaurs were two unrelated groups of marine reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic. Plesiosaurs had long necks and short tails, or short necks and long tails, and they propelled themselves using their flippers. Icthyosaurs were reptiles that looked much like fish, with a long narrow snout, and a vertical tail fin. Both plesiosaurs and icthyosaurs ate marine animals.
No dinosaur was ever dolphin like, however, another group of Mesozoic reptiles, the icthyosaurs, resembled dolphins in shape.
There were no ocean dwelling dinosaurs. Large marine reptiles that are often thought of as dinosaurs include plesiosaurs, pliosaurs, mosasaurs, and icthyosaurs.
There were no aquatic dinosaurs. Some prehistoric marine reptiles are mistakenly called dinosaurs. These include plesiosaurs, pliosaurs, icthyosaurs, and mosasaurs.
All dinosaurs were terrestrial. Therefor, there are no finned dinosaurs. However, there were finned reptiles that looked a lot like fish or dolphins, and they were called icthyosaurs.
Dinosaurs never lived underwater. There were marine reptiles that are sometimes inaccurately called dinosaurs; these include icthyosaurs, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and pliosaurs. All of these are extinct. There are a few marine reptiles alive today, though. These are sea turtles, sea snakes, and the semi-aquatic marine iguana.
Marine creatures like sharks existed in the Jurassic. Marine reptiles like icthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and thalattosuchians also existed. Thalattosuchians are fully marine reptiles.
Dinosaurs were all terrestrial creatures, although a few, such as Spinosaurus and Baryonyx, specialized in freshwater fishing. Large marine reptiles that were not dinosaurs but existed at the same time include plesiosaurs, pliosaurs, icthyosaurs, and mosasaurs.
