When did Glen Sherley die?

Sherley rose for a bit after leaving prison in 1971. However, a life-long criminal, he stumbled back into old habits of drink and drugs. In May 1978, for no reason, he shot and killed a black man named Vernon (unknown last name) while he was high on drugs. Sherley realized that he was finished - that he was going to go to prison for the rest of his life. He called his daughter and told her, "I am not going back to prison." Two days after the shooting, on May 11, 1978, Sherley took his own life by shooting himself in the head near his brother's house in California. Sherley was 42 years old. He was buried in Salinas, California.
