The People's Republic of China (mainland) joined the UN on 24 October, 1945. This morning (2 Aug 2007), the BBC reported that Taiwan may consider re-applying to the UN under the name "Taiwan", and not "Republic of China". An embassador explained that this would be a technical approach, and the constitutional name "Republic of China" would be retained. Of course, it is not clear whether or not the UN would accept Taiwan's application even under the name "Taiwan".
