John Glen was the first American to orbit the Earth in a spacecraft. He did so after (1) , Yuri Gargin (a Russian) orbited the Earth, and (2) after Alan Shepard and (3) Gus Grissom, (two Americans) made a suborbital flight. John Glen was the fourth human being to go into space, the second to orbit, and the first American to orbit the Earth in a space capsule.

John Glenn went into space twice. On February 20, 1962, aboard Friendship 7, Glenn became the third American in space and the first to orbit the Earth. He circled the globe three times during a flight that lasted about 5 hours. On October 29, 1998, at age 77, after serving 24 years in the Senate, he lifted off onboard the Space Shuttle Discovery to become the oldest man to go into space. This record still stands today, a decade later.
