The Beatles grew out of the Quarry Men, a band started by John Lennon in high school. Paul McCartney and George Harrison joined the Quarry Men, and the other members gradually quit.

John Lennon's first group was called The Quarrymen. The group lasted for 3 years from 1957-1960. The group was called The Quarrymen because John went to Quarry Bank High school and sometimes they performed there.

He was about fourteen when he started playing regularly in John Lennon's original band, The Quarry Men. They later became the Beatles.
Lennon apparently never met Donegan, though the Quarry Men did perform "Rock Island Line" and other songs from his repertoire. Paul McCartney got to see Donegan perform at a lunchtime show, when Donegan came to Liverpool.
