Julius Caesar never ended his career as a general, he death only stopped it. At the time of his assassination he was preparing for a campaign against the Parthians. He was due to leave for the campaign in a day or two and that's what made the assassins act when they did, or else they would not get another chance for maybe two or three years, when (and if) Caesar returned.
