Prior to 1792, Kentucky was part of the Commonwealth of Virginia which still included what is now West Virginia. Kentucky was the the 15th Star added to the flag; it was also the last state to have a stripe added to the flag. Kentucky's 15th stripe along with Vermont's 14th stripe was removed from the flag when it was realized that too many stripes would destroy the beauty of the flag. Kentucky never left the Union in the Civil War, thus it did not have to be readmitted.
