Lim Chin Siong and Fong Swee Suan organized a group called, "Students Opposing The Junior Middle III Examinations", galvanizing support for boycotting the examinations. They wrote pamplets, made speeches condemning colonialism and advocated fair and equal treatment for chinese schools and students. It was in these years that Lim joined Students' Anti-British League (ABL) where he's promoted to a Cell Leader which was a communist controlled entity but Lim denied knowing it's a communist run organization. These activities eventually caught attention of Special Branch (British version of the Singapore's Internal Security Department (ISD)). Lim was detained for 1 week in August 1951 and again in October 1951 over examination boycott. Lim was expelled from school, together with more than 80 other students in the class of 1951.
