There are several ways Mary found herself destined for something special:

I. At The Anunciation

At the Anunciation, the archangel Gabriel told her she would give birth to the Son of God - certainly something special! :) (See Luke 1:26-38)

II. In Her Magnificat

Mary's canticle, or song, is her humble way of thanking and glorifying God for allowing her to choose her destiny to be the Mother of God. (See Luke 1:46-55)

III. In The Presentation Of Jesus At The Temple

As early as when Jesus was an infant, Mary learned that she was destined to have the choice to share intimately in the passion and suffering of her Son Jesus. Simeon tells her that a sword will pierce her so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. (See Luke 2:34-35) This is one of the many things she "pondered in her heart." (Luke 2:51)

IV. At The Foot Of The Cross

While on the Cross, "Jesus saw His mother and the disciple there whom He loved", and told her "Woman, behold, your son." (John 19:26). Christ's love for His disciples is not limited, of course, to the one beloved disciple at the Cross - all Christians are disciples whom Jesus loves. In this way Mary beholds every Christian as a beloved disciple - as a beloved spiritual son or daughter to whom she extends her motherly love, care, prayer and intercession.

In this sense, Mary became aware that Jesus was calling her from the Cross to be the Mother of the Church - the spiritual Mother of all Christians.
