Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day in 1868) used to be observed on May 30 of every year until 1970. 1971 was the first year that Memorial Day was moved from its traditional date to the last Monday in May to give federal employees one of their three-day weekends. Since this date the significance of the holiday has been diminished from its original meaning of honoring all US Military who died during all wars and military actions in which the United States has been involved to just being the first long weekend of "summer."
In 1971 the Uniform Monday Holiday Act went into effect moving several holidays to a Monday to give federal employees three-day weekends. Memorial Day was moved from its traditional date of May 30 to the last Monday in May. This is when Memorial Day became known as the unofficial start of summer. Summer does not officially begin until the Summer Solstice occurs (the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere) on June 22nd.
